Biologic medications can’t be absorbed if they’re taken orally, so Richard Herrscher, MD, at AIR Care offers a private office infusion center to provide biologic infusion therapy to his patients, as well as patients referred by other physicians. Biologic infusion therapy is available to treat many health conditions, from atopic dermatitis, chronic hives, and primary immunodeficiency, to Crohn’s disease, arthritis, and multiple sclerosis. Biologic Infusion Therapy Q & A

What are biologics?

Biologics medications are made from living organisms, or they contain components of living organisms, such as proteins and hormones. They’re often called biologic response modifiers because that’s what they do: They change the responses or reactions of cells in your body. For example, biologic drugs may contain cells that release substances known to suppress or activate your immune system.

These drugs have been used for years in vaccinations and to treat allergies. Advances in technology have led to new biologic drugs that effectively treat a variety of health conditions.

What biologic treatments are available?

At the AIR Care office infusion center, Dr. Herrscher provides biologic infusions to patients referred from other physicians when they need biologics to treat many types of cancers, as well as dermatologic, rheumatologic, and gastrointestinal diseases.

He also uses biologics to treat conditions that frequently affect his patients, such as:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic urticaria (hives)
  • Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
  • Primary immunodeficiency

To give you an idea of the value of biologics, this list includes a few of the biologics infused at AIR Care and the conditions treated by each drug:

Remicade®

Treats Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and plaque psoriasis.

Tysabri®

Actemra®

What should I expect when receiving biologic infusion therapy?

The office infusion center at AIR Care offers state-of-the-art therapies in the comfort of a private, quiet office. Many patients come here as an alternative to receiving their intravenous (IV) therapy in the hospital or at home. The team also has extensive experience providing subcutaneous biologic therapy in your home.

When you receive IV biologics at the AIR Care office infusion center, you’ll relax in a reclining lounge chair in either an open suite or a private module, depending on your needs. Throughout your infusion, you’re closely monitored by dedicated nurses, and physicians are on-site to provide additional treatment, if needed.
